FOIS Workshops

FOIS 2014 is proud to include the following workshops. Detailed information (such as submission dates for each workshop) may be found in the specific Workshop page.

8th International Workshop on Modular Ontologies (WoMO 2014)

http://womo2014.bio-lark.org

Modularity, studied for years in software engineering, allows mechanisms for easy and flexible reuse, generalization, structuring, maintenance, design patterns, and comprehension. In formal and applied ontology, modularity is central to reducing the complexity of designing and understanding ontologies, and to facilitating ontology verification, reasoning, maintenance and integration. The workshop continues a series of successful events that have been an excellent venue for practitioners and researchers to discuss latest and current work.

Organizers:

  • Kenneth Paul Baclawski, Associate Professor, College of Computer and Information Science Northeastern University, Boston, MA, USA
  • Tudor Groza, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, eResearch Lab The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia
  • Torsten Hahmann, Assistant Professor, School of Computing and Information Science University of Maine, Orono, ME, USA
  • Ivan Jose Varzinczak, Postdoctoral Fellow, UKZN-CSIR Meraka Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research CSIR Meraka Institute, Pretoria, South Africa

1st Joint Workshop on Ontologies in Conceptual Modeling and Information Systems Engineering (Onto.Com/ODISE)

http://www.mis.ugent.be/ONTO-ODISE-2014

The role of formal ontology in Conceptual Modeling (CM) and Information Systems Engineering (ISE) is increasingly being recognized as fundamental by both the research and practitioner communities. The importance of formal ontology to these interrelated areas has been the theme of two workshops series held over the past years, namely the Workshop on Ontologies and Conceptual Modeling (Onto.Com) and the Workshop on Ontology-Driven Information Systems Engineering (ODISE). Given the strong relationship between the two fields as well as the synergies between the workshops, Onto.Com and ODISE have merged at FOIS 2014.

Organizers:

  • Giancarlo Guizzardi, Federal University of Espirito Santo, Brazil
  • Oscar Pastor, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain
  • Yair Wand, University of British Columbia, Canada
  • Sergio de Cesare, Brunel University, U.K.
  • Frederik Gailly, Ghent University, BelgiumÂ
  • Mark Lycett, Brunel University, U.K.
  • Chris Partridge, BORO Solutions Ltd., U.K.

Workshop on Logics and Ontologies for Natural Language

http://emap.fgv.br/logonto-2014

We propose a second workshop focussing on formal logics and ontologies coming from natural language semantics or computational semantics, especially in languages less endowed with such resources, such as Portuguese. This workshop builds up on the momentum of Logics and Ontologies 2011 Workshop \url{http://emap.fgv.br/NLP-2011l}, which has shown that fruitful interactions exist between the communities and need fostering.

Workshop on Information Artifact Ontologies

http://ncorwiki.buffalo.edu/index.php/Information_Artifact_Ontologies

The IAO workshop, to be held in conjunction with the FOIS2014 conference, will be a forum for sharing foundational issues as well as the more practical aspects of developing ontologies for representing information artifacts. We welcome three types of submissions: tutorial proposals (1-page), short progress reports (1-page), and longer papers up to six pages that address either ontological treatment of information artifacts or the development of resources to represent information artifacts in various domains.

Organizer

Barry Smith, Buffalo, USA

Workshop on Formal Ontologies Meet Industry (FOMI 2014)

http://emap.fgv.br/fomi-2014

FOMI is an international forum where academic researchers and industrial practitioners meet to analyse and discuss application issues related to methods, theories, tools and applications based on formal ontologies. The FOMI 2014 Workshop aims to collect useful experiences and lessons learned by the presentation of (1) experience with problems in ontology application, (2) new insights on known problematic issues, (3) new results, successes and observations in ontology implementation, (4) lessons learned on the best way to apply ontological methodologies to real situations.

Organizers:

  • Vinay Chaudhri, SRI, Menlo Park
  • Alexandre Rademaker, IBM Research, Brazil
